Supporting and Ensuring the Learning of French as a Second Language in a Multilingual Development Context
Showcase Meeting 2 – Tuesday, November 24, 2026
How can we promote the learning of French as a second language while valuing the first language in a multilingual development context?
PRESENTATIONS :
- Geneviève Brisson, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at Université de Sherbrooke, will discuss how to promote the learning of French as a second language while valuing students’ native language(s). Taking into account contexts where an increasing number of students are multilingual, she will explore the connections between languages, identities, and the learning of French to demonstrate how students’ linguistic repertoire can support their learning.
2. Stephen Davis, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Regina, will explore how to adapt French immersion programs and French as a Second Language (FSL) programs to better include and support multilingual students in Canada. He will address the experiences of immigrant and refugee parents, the perspectives of teachers, and ideas for making additional language programs more inclusive and equitable.
