Adapting the Faculty of Education Program at Memorial University

The Faculty of Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) is leading this project which consists of three components:

  1. Adapting the existing French education program at MUN to better reflect the needs of French first-language (FFL) education and French second language (FSL)
  2. Developing the online delivery of the existing program to prepare graduates for digital pedagogy and distance teaching (currently on hold)
  3. Undertaking a virtual promotion and recruitment campaign aimed towards Grade 12 French immersion and core French students to encourage them to continue their postsecondary studies in French at Memorial University.

The initiative benefits the Conseil scolaire francophone provincial (CSFP) by expanding the current teacher education program to include teaching in a French first-language context. It also benefits the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) by better preparing graduates of the Faculty of Education at MUN who have received a greater number of education courses in French, as well as a broader FSL pedagogy. All graduates will be academically prepared to teach in a K-12 French first-language or French second-language rural school structure in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Targeted Results

Fill five French first-language teaching positions in the province.
Increase the number of applicants to the French Education degree program by a minimum of five per year.
Increase the number of second-language graduates to 14 per year ( to a minimum of 25 per year between both programs – primary/elementary and Intermediate/secondary ).
Increase teacher retention by 50 percent after two years, in the province.

Main takeaways (learnings)

  • The more options are offered to students, the more interest and excitement are generated (ex.: course offerings have increased)
  • There are more inquiries about the French Education Program.
  • Sharing information in high schools has increased interest in the program.
  • Increased collaboration between the Francophone and Anglophone school districts.

Potential/desired collaborations

Organizations interested in teacher mentorship
  • For information and knowledge sharing specific to French education.
  • To seek information about preparing pre-service teachers to teach in a French minority context both in FFL and FSL.
Other universities that offer FSL teaching programs
  • To help address program gaps
  • For expertise in offering a French BEd program for K-12.
