SUMMARY:Retaining Students in French as a Second Language (FSL) Programs from Early Childhood Through Adulthood
DESCRIPTION:Showcase meeting 1 – Thursday October 8\, 2026\n\n  \nHow can we encourage participants to stay in programs\, continue their learning\, and keep using French from early childhood through adulthood?\n\n  \nPRESENTATIONS\n  \n\nLaurent Cammarata\, Ph.D.\, Full Professor and Researcher at the Faculté Saint-Jean\, University of Alberta\, and Sarah Fedoration\, Ed.D.\, Language Program Manager at Edmonton Catholic Schools\n\nAttrition happens\, but does it have to? \nDespite the growing popularity of French immersion (FI) programs\, many students leave before completing high school. In some cases\, student attrition can reach 73% between kindergarten and grade 12. Laurent Cammarata and Sarah Fedoration will present data on French immersion enrollment as well as findings from a Canada-wide study on the reasons why parents sometimes withdraw their children from these programs. To better address the challenges\, it is necessary to collect more precise data in order to understand the causes of attrition and find appropriate solutions. \n2. Catherine Levasseur\, PhD\, associate professor and director of graduate studies at the Institute for Official Languages and Bilingualism (ILOB) at the University of Ottawa and Liam McGovern\, research assistant and teacher education student at the University of Ottawa. \nSupporting the inclusion of youth from French immersion programs within the Canadian Francophone community to promote sustainable French language learning. \nAlthough eager to maintain their French skills beyond the school setting\, youth from French immersion programs struggle to find their place in the Canadian Francophone community. Drawing on key findings and major insights from her most recent sociolinguistic research\, Ms. Levasseur will address the issue of these young people’s participation in local community activities in French as a means of supporting their long-term language learning. She will discuss the barriers to this participation and present potential solutions and courses of action to overcome them. \n\nPRESENTATION DOCUMENTS\nPresentation 1: Attrition – Laurent Cammarata and Sarah Fedoration \nPresentation 2: Inclusion of youth from FI – Catherine Levasseur and Liam McGovern \nVideo of the presentation component of the showcase meeting (without the Q&A) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Highlighting Promising FSL-Related Projects in Canada
DESCRIPTION:Showcase Meeting 3 – Tuesday\, January 19\, 2027\n  \nWhat are some promising projects related to the teaching and learning of French as a Second Language (FSL) in Canada that were carried out in 2026?\n  \nPRESENTATIONS :\n  \n\nZarko Drljaca\, Manager\, and Mitzi Lee\, Specialist in the Recruitment and Certification of International Teachers\, Make A Future – Careers in BC Education – Make A Future’s French project aims to strengthen the recruitment and retention of qualified teachers for French programs in British Columbia’s public schools. The project promotes careers in French language teaching and raises awareness of available opportunities through\, among other things\, targeted campaigns as well as local and international job fairs. In addition\, various outreach initiatives targeting prospective candidates—supplemented by a concierge service—help support them through the certification and hiring processes. The goal is to increase the visibility of teaching opportunities\, support school districts in their recruitment efforts\, and inspire more people to consider a career in French-language education.\n\n2. Jessica Saada\, Executive Director\, and Marie-France Gaumont\, Senior Advisor\, Canadian Association of Immersion Professionals (ACPI) — As part of its second Canada-wide consultation\, ACPI gave a voice to more than 2\,600 French immersion professionals and partners to gather their current perspectives and take stock of the situation. The picture that emerges from their analysis reflects a field that is clearly in flux: student profiles and needs are becoming more diverse\, professional realities are changing\, and certain challenges persist or are taking on new forms. This presentation highlights the key findings from this process\, as well as the proposed solutions. \n*******Registration opens November 24\, 2026***
